The Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea at the luxury 5* Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair, London. Very highly recommended experience whilst visiting London.

When we visited London last month for our 10th wedding anniversary celebrations I made sure I had lots planned for us to do. Being a big fan of Afternoon Tea I took ages looking on the internet for somewhere to enjoy one.

After searching for a little while I found the 5* Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair. I suddenly remembered that this was the hotel we would walk past so often in London and I would always think to myself that one day I would like to stay there. Jumping on to their website I found quite a few different Afternoon Tea experiences to choose from.

The Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea caught my eye straight away. The Athenaeum says 'To celebrate Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland 150th Anniversary, we’re inviting guests to host their own Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.  Our Mad Hatter’s Tea is designed to tempt with white chocolate clock cakes, mushroom meringues, chocolate tea cups and other tea-time favourites.  Fancy a fascinator, headdress or mad hat of your own?  We have plenty to choose from for you and your party.'

I had booked an early Afternoon Tea for 12pm as we had lots planned that day. Upon arrival we were seated to await our time slot but only waited for a few minutes before being shown to a gorgeous room for our Afternoon Tea experience. We got to choose which tea we would like from a good selection of different flavours and aromas and we settled down into the comfy sofa and large armchairs. You get 2 hours for your afternoon tea experience which is more than enough time without feeling rushed either.

Our tea arrived within minutes and I was ready for a lovely cuppa and something to eat. What arrived looked absolutely amazing. With 4 different fillings in the sandwiches, scones with cream, jam and lemon curd and some lovely cakes on the top tier of the cake stand. I was in heaven. The lady who served us that day was so very attentive and friendly. We felt we got the exact level of care and attention throughout our whole experience without feeling overly hassled or ignored either.

Our Afternoon Tea before we got started.

We really relaxed that lunchtime! Something we haven't done for a long time or been alone without the children whilst we eat! The sandwiches were lovely, very tasty and we did ask for more which was great. We were kept well stocked with our choice of tea too. The water was refilled and kept nice and fresh and hot and when we needed a refill the lovely waitress poured our tea for us too.

Moving on to the scones (always a hit with me!). The lemon curd was divine. I've always been a traditional jam and clotted cream girl when it comes to scones but the lemon curd was definitely a hit with me too. It was lovely.

After a bit of a rest and some time to actually talk to each other, something we don't do often enough these days, it was on to the cakes at the top. We took our time! There was so much choice and we maybe should have taken the lady seriously when she said there were more cakes to come. As we made our way slowly through the meringue mushrooms, chocolate dipped strawberries and jelly bean topped mousse cake it was lovely to relax back in the peaceful surroundings.

Our first lot of cake. The jelly bean cake was actually strawberry mousse wrapped in coloured white chocolate with jelly beans on the top.

I managed to sneak a glass of bubbly to the table whilst hubby was elsewhere, being our 10th wedding anniversary I couldn't let it pass without some bubbly, even if I don't like it he shouldn't have to miss out. Something he very much enjoyed when he saw it on the table.

Then the next lot of desserts arrived on a trolley. A huge array of sliced chocolate cakes and sponges, various different loaf cakes and some decadent looking cupcakes. Oh the choice, and after what we had just eaten it was a tough choice but we couldn't say No! The treat at the end was the gorgeous chocolate 'Athenaeum' birds that had been set out on a plate as an anniversary surprise. Something we knew nothing about and topped off an already perfect Afternoon Tea.

Our lovely anniversary surprise.

I would very much highly recommend The Athenaeum for an Afternoon Tea venue. As well as the Mad Hatter's afternoon tea there is also four other experiences to choose from.

The wonderful lady who served us on the day was amazing. So friendly, attentive and approachable if we needed anything and I am sorry that I didn't catch her name to pass on our thanks to her for the job that she did on the day in making that part of our anniversary celebrations perfect.

We will definitely be going back again to The Athenaeum for another afternoon tea very soon and maybe a stay in the hotel next time too.
